You may have heard the terms ‘pigment-dyed’ and ‘garment-dyed’ and wondered, what’s the difference? Or maybe you assumed that they were the same. Let’s break it down here.
Pigment-dying is an application in which the pigment dye is applied to the surface (outside layer) of the fabric (after it’s been cut and sewn into a finished piece), creating a distinct texture and resulting in a washed or faded appearance.
Garment-dying is a post-production dying process in which the entire garment is dyed at once. The dye is fully absorbed into the fibers of the entire garment, resulting in a super-soft texture and muted, old time appearance.
What Sets Pigment-Dyed Apparel Apart?

Apparel labels (which we refer to as ‘Woven Labels’ & ‘Hem Tags’) are more than just tags sewn into garments; they're a powerful brand-building feature that works to market your apparel brand to your customers! Woven Labels vs. Hem Tags..What’s the difference?
There isn’t one! Whether you call them woven labels, hem tags, or even woven hem tag..it doesn’t matter! These two interchanging terms are essentially one in the same.
We have different woven label sizes, folds, and shape options for you to choose from. Threadbird can create and attach your labels to a variety of locations on garments or products. If we wanted to get really technical, the only ‘difference’ between a woven label and hem tag is the location of where the label is sewn & attached to on the garment. We just tend to refer to labels as hem tags, when the label is sewn onto the hem of garment. However, woven labels can also be sewn onto the hem, along with several other locations. 2x2” Hem Tag (Attached to Sleeve Hem & 2x4” Woven Label (Attached to Shirt Bottom Hem)
Attachment Locations: Woven labels i.e hem tags are typically sewn on the inside neck collar of a shirt, pocket seam, garment side seam, over a sleeve cuff or bottom hem of a tee where they're easily visible, but also discreet.
Tag Design: Depending on the size of label you choose, your sewn tags can include important details such as your company name and logo, while also representing your brand colors.

Printing on Ribbed Garments
When a ribbed garment is pulled onto the press for screen printing, it is not stretched out. When the ink is applied it will sit on the top of the ribs. When worn the material stretches and the ribs will pull apart exposing a non-printed area in between the ribs.
Is there any way to prevent this from happening?
We can apply more pressure on the press when screen printing on ribbed shirts and garments to try to force the ink into the gaps, but this limits the amount of detail that is actually shown when printing on the ribbed garment. Because of these issues, we strongly suggest that you do not print on ribbed garments.
